MODIFICATION SPECIALIST

    THE POSITION

    We are looking for a full-time, quality-focused team player to work as a Modification Specialist in Interport’s dedicated container modification facility. The Modification Specialist is responsible for performing duties in all areas of the Modification Shop under the supervision of the Director of Production.

    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Join, design, fabricate and repair equipment, structures, and various types of metal objects using an array of welding techniques such as MIG and TIG welding, electric arc, and oxygen-acetylene
    • Analyze blueprints, plans, and drawings to determine measurements, plan layout, and sequence of welding assignments
    • Determine the best equipment and welding method based on specific job requirements
    • Recommend supplies and materials and estimate the cost of materials and labor
    • Operate drill presses, grinders, power saws, and hand tools
    • Inspect and test welded structures and surfaces to discover flaws
    • Use and maintain equipment responsibly as to not compromise safety
    • Interpret and accommodate customer requests related to design, materials, and other technical issues
    • Measure, shape, and cut wood, fiberglass, and other materials
    • Inspect and evaluate materials for defects or damaged frames, fixtures, and other structures
    • Construct, build, and install fixtures, structures, molding, windows, cabinets, and counters as well as structural frames, doors, and staircases
    • Maintain familiarity with both raw and pre-constructed materials
    • Lay out framing and drywalls, keeping all elements level, plumb, and square
    • Comply with company policies and procedures
    • Participate in and adhere to Interport’s safety and compliance programs
    • Assist with additional/special projects as needed

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
    • Minimum of 2,000 hours of training or on-the-job experience
    • Demonstrated ability to work with steel, including cutting, burning, welding, and plasma cutting
    • Demonstrated ability to work with hand and power tools
    • Previous experience in manufacturing or shop work, including training in metal- or wood-working
    • Ability to read and understand detailed blueprints and technical drawings
    • Construction skills including carpentry and basic wiring
    • Certification through the American Welding Society (AWS)
    • OSHA Safety Certification
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds and sit, stand, or walk for extended periods
    • Willingness to work indoors and out in all weather conditions
    • Spoken and written English proficiency
    • Ability to work overtime during the week and occasionally on weekends and holidays
    • Ability to commute to Newark, NJ, with driving privileges in good standing

    Employment is subject to the completion of due-diligence inquiries, including a background check and a pre-employment medical examination including a drug and alcohol screen, which will take place after a conditional offer is made.

    PREFERRED/PLUS

    • Minimum two years’ experience in container modification, metalworking, or equivalent field
    • Prior experience operating heavy-duty lift trucks
    • Familiarity with ISO container maintenance and repair
    • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing concepts, methodologies, and techniques
    • Fluency in English and Spanish languages
